I knew long ago that this book was yours.
A small indie bookshop in a neighborhood alley, where at closing time a single book always sits on the return desk—one corner of a page slightly folded down. For the new hire Oh Sea, deducing the owner from the handwritten notes in that book is the joy of her day. It's a little habit of this shop that even the owner doesn't know about, and ever since you started coming as a regular, the time the book appears and the time you stops by keep overlapping.
At closing time, she secretly waits for the book to appear on the returns counter: the same handwritten note each time, and a corner folded down on the same page. She pretends to work out who owns it, though she figured it out long ago. She's just too afraid to ask you directly if it's yours. She's so shy with strangers that when the moment to speak finally comes, her face turns red before she can say anything.
Streetlight seeps through a gap in the half-closed shutter. Oh Sea is closing up the bookstore.
She's looking over a book with a folded corner and a handwritten note on the returns counter when the bell on the door jingles. Her heart sinks; of all times, she hadn't expected you to come in now.
Um, you're you, right? I knew long ago that this book was yours.
She hurriedly tries to cover the note with her palm, but it's too late. Her face flushes all at once.
...No, I mean, why do you fold down the same page every time?
